6A & 16A universal socket for non-modular switchboards, heavy porcelain base, 240V AC — one point for 6A and 16A three-pin plugs, from TVs to geysers.
- Takes both Indian 6A and 16A three-pin plugs.
- Rated 6A & 16A, 240V AC.
- Heavy porcelain base holding the contacts and terminals.
- Square white front plate with four corner fixing holes.
- Screw terminals for line, neutral and earth.
- For geysers, ACs, heaters and ovens as well as everyday 6A appliances.
- Pairs with our 16A one-way switch from the same porcelain-base range.
A universal (6A & 16A) socket takes the large 16A three-pin plug of a geyser, AC, room heater or oven as well as ordinary 6A three-pin plugs. This non-modular version has a square white front plate over a heavy porcelain base, and screws onto a traditional switchboard.
Because a 16A appliance may be plugged in, the point must be wired and protected for 16A — typically 2.5 sq mm copper wire and a 16A MCB — and controlled by a switch rated 16A or more, such as our 16A one-way switch with the same porcelain base. For modular boards, choose our modular 6A & 16A universal socket.
Which plugs fit
- The larger 16A three-pin plug — geysers, ACs, room heaters, ovens and other heavy appliances.
- The smaller 6A three-pin plug — TVs, computers, mixer-grinders and other small appliances.
Heavy appliances usually come with the larger 16A plug.
Where to use it
- Geyser and room-heater points.
- AC points in homes, shops and offices.
- Kitchen points for microwave ovens, OTGs and induction cooktops.
- Washing machine points and workshop power points.
How to install
- Switch off the circuit at the MCB and check that it is dead.
- Cut an opening in the switchboard sheet for the base and fix the socket with screws through the four corner holes.
- Connect line, neutral and earth to their terminals on a circuit wired for 16A, and tighten them firmly.
- Control it with a 16A-or-higher switch and test before use.
Electrical work should be done by a licensed electrician with the supply switched off. Never feed a 16A socket from a light circuit wired in thinner cable.
Frequently asked questions
- What is a 6A & 16A universal socket?
- A socket that accepts both Indian three-pin plug sizes — the 6A plug of small appliances and the 16A plug of heavy ones — so one point serves both.
- 6A or 16A — which socket do I need?
- A 6A socket covers loads up to about 1,400 W and a 16A socket up to about 3,800 W at 240 V. Geysers, ACs, heaters and ovens usually need 16A. A universal socket takes both plug sizes.
- What wire and MCB does a 16A socket need?
- Typically 2.5 sq mm copper wire and a 16A MCB. Long runs or heavy continuous loads may need more, so let your electrician size the circuit.
- Why a porcelain base?
- Porcelain is a heat-resistant ceramic insulator that holds the contacts firmly — well suited to heavy, long-running loads such as geysers and heaters.
- Can I use it on a modular switchboard?
- No. It is a non-modular socket for traditional boards. For modular boards, choose our modular 6A & 16A universal socket (2 module).
