A 1 way switch is the everyday on/off switch: it connects or breaks the phase wire to one light, fan or appliance point from one place. This is the modular version — one module wide — which clips into a modular cover plate and base on a concealed box or a surface gang box, in line with the sockets, regulators and other switches on the board.
At 10A it suits the normal lighting and fan circuits of a home, office or shop. For a geyser, AC, pump or a 16A power socket, choose our 20A 1 way switch; to control one light from two places, such as a staircase, use a pair of 2 way switches.
What you need with it
- A modular cover plate with base (frame) — the switch clips into the base; our Bingo cover plates with base suit this range.
- A concealed box inside the wall, or a surface gang box on the wall, of the same module size as the plate.
- A 1 module blank plate for any opening you leave empty.
This switch takes 1 module. Add up the modules on the board — most sockets and fan regulators take 2 — and choose the plate and box of that size, with a module or two spare.

How to install
- Switch off the supply at the MCB and check that the wires are dead.
- Connect the incoming phase to one terminal and the wire to the light or fan to the other, and tighten both screws firmly.
- Clip the switch into the base of the modular plate, fix the base to the box and fit the cover plate.
- Switch on and check that the light or fan works from the switch.
Electrical work should be done by a licensed electrician with the supply switched off.

- What is a 1 way switch used for?
- To turn one light, fan or small appliance on and off from one place. It breaks the phase wire, so the load is dead when the switch is off.
- 10A or 20A switch — which do I need?
- Typically 10A for lights, fans, TV and charger points, and 20A for heavy loads such as a geyser, AC, water pump or a 16A power socket. A 3 kW geyser, for example, draws about 13A — too much for a 10A switch.
- 1 way or 2 way switch — which do I need?
- A 1 way switch controls a load from one place. To control one light from two places — the top and bottom of a staircase, or a bedroom door and bedside — you need two 2 way switches instead.
- Will it fit my existing modular plate?
- Modular switches share a standard module width, but the clips differ between ranges. It suits our Bingo cover plates with base and our modular surface gang boxes; with another make of plate, check one module first.
- Does a switch protect the circuit?
- No. A switch only turns the load on and off. Overload and short-circuit protection comes from the MCB or fuse in your distribution board, which must suit the cable.
