Metal clad plugs and sockets are the heavy-duty plug-in connection for air conditioners, heaters, pumps, workshop machines and temporary site supplies, where a normal 6A or 16A plug top is not enough. The metal shroud protects the pins, and the plug fits only a metal clad socket of the same type.
The 20A 2 pole plug (as pictured) has L and N pins with a separate earth contact marked E, and is marked 20A MAX 250V for single-phase loads. The 3 pole plugs, in 20A and 30A, have three pins and are typically used for three-phase equipment — check the rating marked on the face before connecting.
